Are You Taking Fire Safety Seriously Enough?

So, you have probably looked at the title of this blog post and thought ‘ugh boringgggg’ but NO! Furniture fire regulations are very important for YOU and YOUR family’s safety!

Here is a little background on The Furniture and Furnishings Regulations 1988. Due to the increase of fire-related deaths between the 1960’s and 80’s, this law was produced to decrease this number, and keep you safe! Since this date, the regulations have been updated multiple times to keep on top of our safety! It has been proven that by having the regulation set in place there has been a decrease in fire related deaths.

Here’s some support for when you’re battling your case on safety…

The furniture should have permanent labelling and show compliance with specific ignition requirements for covers and fillings. This applies to all furniture, with the exception of mattresses, divans, and bed bases. These labels can be incorporated into others, such as care labels.

The UK have some of the toughest rules in the world on furniture and fire safety! It is ILLEGAL for a company to supply furniture that doesn’t comply with the regulations. Where necessary, furniture may be treated with flame retardant to ensure safety. Although there is a slight battle with retardant, this being that it is safer as it burns slower than non-retardant furniture, but, on the other side, it produces 2 to 3 times as much toxic gas.

This is where both sides have been compared and weighed out against one another. We need furniture to be as safe as possible, but we want as fewer flame retardant chemicals, so how do we overcome this? As all smoke can incapacitate and kill, the critical way to prevent all smoke deaths is to prevent fire. As the use of flame retardant decreases the number of furniture fires, and therefore meaning there will not be an increase of chemicals or smoke, flame retardant is a safe option!

There are various furnishings that these rules do not apply to, for more info take a look at:
